OKAY so Netflix did a genius thing & have a bunch of scary stuff to watch all grouped together in a seasonal ‘Netflix & Chills‘ category. AND with me being a lover of all things SPOOKY, I thought I’d put together a scary movie playlist for Netflix users. INCLUDING a fright meter, the more jack-o’-lanterns the more nightmare fuel. A scary movie playlist for those who wanna get a little SPOOKY this season.
scary movie playlist:
IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER & fright meter based on a 1-5 level of SCARINESS.
THE CONJURING
- Horror movies that are ‘based on true events’ literally always get me. SO CREEPY. A family moves into an old farmhouse & some seriously paranormal stuff ensues. I definitely recommend this one for a good scare & if you like it, there are a few other movies that take place in the same universe. Directed by James Wan and starring Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson & Lili Taylor.

THE WITCH
- Based in old New England, a family suspects that witches have put a curse on them and things gradually take a turn for the worse. What can be trusted when witches are involved? This horror movie is directed by Robert Eggers and starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson & Kate Dickie.

IT FOLLOWS
- Young love and a lethal curse passed on by sexual intercourse. This supernatural horror movie keeps your attention as a unique & hauntingly unnerving tale unfolds. Directed by David Robert Mitchell and starring Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist & Daniel Zovatto.
- fright meter: ππ
THE SHINING
- A classic thriller, a cult movie classic. This one is all about madness of the mind and takes place in a very eerie hotel with something new around every corner. Directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall & Danny Lloyd. HERE’S JOHNNY.
- fright meter: ππππ
CORALINE
- I saw this with my dad when it came out in theaters & we really liked it. Artsy & imaginative, but not really that scary. Coraline travels to a world that is like her own, except very different. This animated film is directed by Henry Selick starring the voices of Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher & John Hodgman.

THE SIXTH SENSE
- I watched this thriller twice in a row when I was younger & I’ve never fully been able to get the images out of my head. A psychologist helping a little boy who confides in him that he can see dead people, complete with a twist ending. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan and starring Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment & Toni Collette.
- fright meter: πππ
BEFORE I WAKE
- A husband & wife are mourning the loss of their son & take in a foster child who has some insane dreams, and potentially deadly nightmares. This thriller is definitely a bit more suspenseful & a cool concept for sure. Directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane & Jacob Tremblay.
- fright meter: πππ
THE INVITATION
- A dinner party hosted by an ex-wife gets SO weird and turns very creepy, real fast. This psychological thriller throws you for a few curves & definitely keeps you guessing. Directed by Karyn Kusama and starring Logan Marshall-Green, Tammy Blanchard & Emayatzy Corinealdi.
- fright meter: ππ
THE BOY
- A nanny is hired to watch an elderly couple’s son & it turns out that he’s actually a doll. Do you think he has good intentions? YA KNOW there’s just something about dolls that totally creeps me out. This thriller is directed by William Brent Bell and starring Lauren Cohan, Rupert Evans & James Russell.
- fright meter: πππ
HUSH
- A hard-of-hearing girl holding her own against a masked maniac who appears outside her secluded cabin one night. The lack of AND use of noise in this scary movie really puts you on edge & keeps you there. Directed by Mike Flanagan and starring John Gallagher Jr., Kate Siegel & Michael Trucco.
- fright meter: πππ
THE VILLAGE
- I’m a BIG M. Night Shyamalan fan & this drama/thriller about an intriguing little village is no exception, although not entirely all that scary. Starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Joaquin Phoenix & Adrien Brody, definitely NOT ONE complaint about this spectacular cast. One of my faves, I’m a total sucker for a twist ending.

DONNIE DARKO
- I didn’t LOVE this the first time I watched it, but thought it was kinda cool the second time. SO here it is for you to make your own opinion. A troubled teen, sleepwalking & a very creepy rabbit. This sci-fi & fantasy drama is directed by Richard Kelly and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone & Drew Barrymore.
