SIMPLE TIPS FOR SUSTAINABLE FASHION

sustainable fashion

I don’t know about you, but I care about the planet, or whatever. Maybe it’s because I watched Captain Planet as a kid, or maybe it was that R-E-C-Y-C-L-E RECYCLE song from Rocko’s Modern Life. EITHER WAY I love fashion, but I don’t think it should destroy the planet. I’m trying to build a more sustainable closet & support more ethical brands, BUT I’m also kinda a thrifty bitch. SO HERE are some easy and cost-effective tips for sustainable fashion, some simple tips for a more ethical wardrobe.

how to build a sustainable closet

SHOP AT THRIFT STORES

  • Thrifting is a great way to build a more ethical wardrobe. You’re recycling clothes, giving them a new home & saving some money at the same time. I like to experiment with thrifted fashion because when something is only a dollar or two, I’m more apt to take my scissors & sewing machine to it & get creative. ALSO with sites like ThredUp you can do your thrift shopping online without even leaving your couch.
  • THIS SHIRT is from a collaboration ThredUp did with Olivia Wilde to combat textile waste. With 10% of the net proceeds going to the Circular Fashion Fund, the idea is to support a more sustainable fashion future.
  • IF you’re into thrifting, I have a few thrift with me videos on my channel as well:

CHOOSE QUALITY PIECES OVER QUANTITY

  • INSTEAD of buying every single new trendy piece, try picking better quality pieces & buying a little less stuff. ABSOLUTELY do NOT get me wrong, I believe in going for a trend when the mood strikes. BUT even just simply being more aware of what you’re buying can help build a more sustainable closet.

TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR CLOTHES

  • SPOILER: when you take good care of your clothes, they last longer. This includes, but isn’t limited to, following washing instructions, hand washing if necessary, washing less, line dry, etc. whatever you need to do to make sure you get the most out of that piece. ALSO try not to spill & stain, but, that’s easier said when good food is messy food.

GO THROUGH YOUR CLOSET

  • LOOK through the clothes that you simply aren’t wearing anymore and DONATE. Anything in good shape that you don’t need or want or wear can be donated. Someone else might be thrilled to wear something you’ve had just sitting in your closet collecting dust.

REPAIR BEFORE YOU REPLACE

  • AND EVEN THEN just when you think you’ve gotten the most out of your clothes, there’s always the option to repair before you replace.

BUY OFF SEASON

  • ANOTHER great way to build a sustainable wardrobe is by buying off season styles. WHO really cares if something is off season if you like it? One time I bought a santa jumpsuit in the summer because there was a sick deal AND THEN I had it ready & waiting come Christmas. You get to save some money AND save products from being thrown away, which does actually happen sometimes.

SHOP YOUR CLOSET BEFORE THE STORE

  • YOU KNOW the feeling when you have an event coming up & you’re like ‘I have absolutely nothing to wear.’ WELL tell that voice to shut up & take a look inside your closet before heading to the store. DO YOU have something you’ve only worn once? OR MAYBE something you could style a different way? That’s sustainability, baby, lol.

SHARE WITH A FRIEND

  • AND IF you really have NOTHING to wear, why not phone a friend? Borrowing from someone can help make your closet FEEL new without you actually having to BUY anything new. You could even do a swap so you BOTH have something new-to-you to wear!

how to tell if a brand is ethical

thrift shopping
  • †do they have any certifications?
  • read the ‘about’ page on their website
  • do they give back or donate to the community?
  • does the brand tell you where their fabric is sourced?
  • & SO MUCH MORE: The Green Hub has a great post on ethical fashion if you want more info!
